Butoh Panel Discussion with Scholars and Festival Artists

NEW YORK BUTOH FESTIVAL 2005: PERFORMANCE
This evening serves as an introduction to and an in-depth dialogue on butoh. The panel of academics (including Andre Lepecki/NYU, Mark Franko/UCSC and Carol Martin/NYU) and butoh artists (including Yuko Kaseki, Kan Katsura and others) will begin with a discussion of the cultural context out of which butoh began. Rare video clips of works by the two founders of butoh, Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, will be shown to demonstrate the two different traditions and styles of the form. Artists from the festival will show video excerpts of their work and discuss the complex nature of their choreographic process. The panelists will explore and re-evaluate the current state of butoh and examine the future of this international and constantly evolving art form.
Selections from rare butoh dance videos will be shown and dancers from the festival will perform short excerpts and demonstrate the complex nature of their choreographic process. A panel of critics, academics and butoh artists – from Japan, Europe and the United States – will explore and reevaluate the current state of butoh and examine the future of this international and constantly evolving art form.
Yoshioka developed the choreography of this performance from All Moonshine (created in 1989, in collaboration with Minako Seki) and from her other early works.
