Before the Dawn
Yumiko Yoshioka
NEW YORK BUTOH FESTIVAL 2005: PERFORMANCE
Before the Dawn is a dance of metamorphosis, where darkness melts into brightness. Through transformation I want to illuminate the secrets in our bodies. Creatures hidden in our forgotten memories joyfully start to revive. Something grotesque yet strangely beautiful grabs our attention. We can’t help but be captivated by this strange force, a source of darkness and light.
Yumiko Yoshioka’s new work is a joyful dance of metamorphosis, where darkness melts into brightness and the hidden secrets of the body – the dark and beautiful memories that haunt us – are illuminated.”Yoshioka was what every dancer dreams of becoming: a perfectly tuned expressive form, capable of making even the empty space between limbs or fingers thrum with life.” Dance Magazine
