Daiji Meguro, the Piercing Butoh Class, Tanya Calamoneri

LEIMAY PRESENTING SERIES 2011: FERMENT

“i” by Daiji Meguro’s and members of the Piercing Butoh Class was a performance which followed Tanya Calamoneri’s “Introduction to the History of Butoh” presentation.

“An old man was standing on the road and counting wrinkles of his hands. Perhaps he couldn’t see it well because of his aged eyes, but he was trying to see it while quickly bringing his hands closer to or keeping them away from his eyes. It was very serious but also humorous.
I was attracted to his action, concentration, and his body.
We are demanded for useful actions, concentration, and bodies for economy and society, but his body existed besides these. It was casting doubt on our body – “What is a body?” “Is only a useful body a body?” – It was Butoh for me. I think that it is Butoh to have doubts about an existing body. I explore such a body. In this piece, I requested it from the dancers.
I hope that useless bodies appear in this piece.” Daiji Meguro
