Join an afternoon of screenings and conversation around the project ‘Extinction Rituals’ by multidisciplinary artists Ximena Garnica (Colombia), Shige Moriya (Japan), and their company LEIMAY (Bogotá-NY). As winners of the Creative Capital Award from the United States and with the support of del Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y los Saberes de Colombia, as well as la Secretaría de Cultura, Recreación y Deporte de Bogotá, they began this project in 2023 with the Extinction Rituals, Itinerant Residency: Collective Imaginaries and Possible Futures’ which took place in Colombia (Guapi, Tumaco, and Bogotá), in the United States (New York), and in Japan (Shiretoko, Akanko, and Kyoto).
In Colombia, different pedagogical and creative processes framed by dance, audiovisual creation, and cultural and knowledge exchange were carried out, nurturing artistic processes and environmental activism in each community.
Videos of the memories of this intercultural and geographical journey will be shared, accompanied by a conversation with activists, leaders, and stewards of processes of preservation, sustainability and care of the environment. This conversation aims to make visible initiatives from different communities, ranging from the protection of Gorgona Island to a woman-led community-based business, with circular economy; to initiatives for the conservation of the mangroves of the Colombian Pacific and the Wetlands of Bogotá.
This conversation will feature the in-person and virtual participation of Thought Partners: Aura Gonzales Sevillano (Promoter of Empresa Comunitaria de Mujeres “Rios Unidos”); Ever Ledesma (Protector of the mangroves of the Colombian Pacific, and leader of the Asociación Asofuturo); Armando Palau (Environmental lawyer of CIRPA and director of the Fundación Biodiversidad); Hugo Plazas (Interpreter and environmental educator of the Spaces of Water and Nature); and will be moderated by LEIMAY Co-Director Ximena Garnica, along with LEIMAY Producer Sergio Santana.
Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya are a Colombian-Japanese duo of artists working in the fields of visual and performing arts as multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary artists, serving as directors, choreographers, curators, and educators. Their collaborative works include performances, sculptural installations, video art, mixed media, and light installations, as well as photography and film projects. Garnica and Moriya also invest their energy in critical research, both in print and digital publications, educational activities, and community projects based on resource exchange and collaboration.
Their work is rooted in inquiries about being, perception, interdependence, and coexistence. They seek to expose the multiplicity of spatial and temporal intervals that exist within the body, between materials, and environments. They question what arises when the stability of habits, the assertion of binaries, the expectations of social norms, and the crystallization of identity dissolve, exposing the potentialities of being.
